GAP 1 evaluates progress towards gender parity in education

This first GAP report presents an ongoing evaluation of progress towards gender parity in education. It is designed to assess progress towards universal primary education, highlight innovations, identify obstacles, generate discussion and provide guidance.

Section one outlines the progress towards gender equality in education by 2005, the chapters provide a chronicle of the history and an analysis of the challenge to get all children (girls as well as boys) in school, or know why they are not.

Section two examines the current state of gender parity in education in each region, identifying the obstacles and presenting effective interventions.

The third section presents excerpts from interviews with six people (an economist, a sociologist, an anthropologist, an educator, an activist and a mother) talking about the importance of gender parity, education and development.
