This report examines teacher training needs of secondary education teachers in developing countries. It provides a literature review, and provides in depth case studies from Vietnam, Cambodia, Ghana, Senegal, Chile and Mexico. The goal of the study this paper is reporting on was to assess what developing countries are doing – and which are the teacher training needs and major skill gaps – to equip teachers with the competencies and skills which facilitate student acquisition of the key competencies required in the knowledge society.
The report concludes that the pressing issues for education decision-makers today are how to attract able graduates into the teaching profession, and how to retain them there. Comprehensive incentive policies to attract and retain high quality teachers need to be designed towards the effective and dynamic integration of teacher professional development and career issues, teacher deployment policies and class size, and monitoring and evaluation practices.
