The Minister of Education, Mrs. Naledi Pandor (MP), today, announced the release of The National Framework for Teacher Education and Development in South Africa. This coincided with the celebration of World Teachers’ Day with the UNESCO theme of “Training for a stronger teaching force”. Making the announcement, the Minister of Education, said, “This theme resonates with my Department’s commitment to ensuring that there is a dedicated and competent teacher in every classroom in the country.” The Framework for Teacher Education and Development provides a clear and coherent policy for the recruitment, training and professional development of teachers. It draws on the significant work of the Ministerial Committee on Teacher Education, chaired by Professor W Morrow.
This was followed by extensive consultations with a range of stakeholders including Higher Education Institutions, NGOs working in teacher education and Teacher Unions. The document is available on the Department of Education’s website www.education.gov.za. It will also be gazetted for public comment within the next week, for a period of twenty-one (21) days and comments can be made from either of these. All comments will be considered after which the Minister of Education will declare policy on Teacher Education and Development.
