Recent developments in History of Education in Western Europe and their significance for Southern Africa - Charl Wolhuter

The aim of this paper is to review recent deliberations on the future of History of Education in Western Europe and to explore the significance of this debate for History of Education in Southern Africa. To coincide with the dawn of a new century, eminent international historians of education embarked upon a stock-taking exercise and a tuning of their disciplinary compass for the challenges of the 21st century. They sought a new place for History of Education in teacher training institutions and in informing public debate on education and education reform. They identified a host of themes and new data sources in carrying out these functions. This article discusses these new themes and methods and in concusion proposes guidelines for the development of History of Education in Southern Africa.
