Three challenges are posed to the architects of South African Universities of Technology in terms of the definitions of technology, the view that technology is in itself a positive value, and the usage of the term in relation to definitions of human beings or the human condition. There is a need to broaden and deepen the understanding and conceptualisation of these definitions as they pertain to the institution type. The definition of a university of technology as an institution type cannot logically be determined outside of attempts to define technology per se. Moreover, these issues are in a constant state of flux and to ignore this may lead to the establishment of a monolithic institution that is neither geared towards reflective practice or able to accommodate the kind of critical discourse that is required to mediate the effects of technology in a fast-changing world
