This study was used to find out the reasons for the continuous drop-out of girls in Primary Education in three districts in Zambezia Province, namely Maganja da Costa, Morrumbala and Nicoadala.. The study looked at the barriers to girls’ education and the interlinkages between different barriers, both from a rural and semi-urban context, and attempts to establish an understanding of the relations between poverty and other causes affecting girls’ access and retention to primary education. The major overall factors on the supply-side directly influencing the girls’ education are:
- difficult access to schools, in particular distance to EP2 level schools
- low quality and low relevance of education
- violence and abuse in schools
